Nobody would have expected this last year but it seems that the recession has finally taken it’s toll for Nintendo as well. In Japan the Wii’s weekly sales dropped 9,000 units. That means for the week ending on January 18th, the PlayStation 3 is only behind by 12,000 sales (not much compared to what it used to be). It’s the closest it has been to the home console market leader in months.
This ‘performance’ is interesting as at it’s current price-point many would not predict the PlayStation 3 to keep alive. To clear up some matter, the sales of the PlayStation 3 didn’t rise for this week but ‘only’ dropped 7,500.
Edge Online said something that made me think
A clearer picture of Sony’s, and indeed its Nintendo’s, performance will be established when Japanese consumers’ expenses become more balanced.

So the week Grand Theft Auto IV was released. How did it affect the hardware sales? I think it is in Playstation 3’s hand because if you look at the chart the PS3 out sold the 360 in all territories bringing the weekly total to 353k vs 360’s 265k.
