A retailer in speaking with Eurogamer has some details on a new PS3 Slim SKU may be releasing as soon as October. The new PS3 Slim SKU would be packaged with one of three games. Having  a choice of Assassins Creed 2, Gran Turismo 5, or Uncharted 2.

What’s more peculiar were that Gran Turismo 5 had earlier reports of releasing this holiday season, soon after Gran Turismo PSP is released. So this news may be true. Possible announcement at Tokyo Game Show? Stay tuned for more details on this topic.

The people at IFixIt have managed to dismantle the Playstation 3 Slim, revealing the rather small motherboard the machine carries.

The question is how much smaller is it compared to the regular Playstation 3? Below is a comparison between a 60GB PS3 and a 120GB PS3 Slim.

Spot the difference.

ps3 slim disc entry

We would have rather done it but since we’re not professional writers (or decent writers at all) and get stuff send we bumped into a site that did get it. Gizmodo is the name and here are some part of what they thought about it so far.

Audible comparison vs. original PS3

We tested the two consoles with a Transformers 2 game. While the fans were pretty much the same between the two consoles, the disc drive is noticeably louder (but not a ton louder) on the PS3 Slim. Using a decibel-meter app on the iPhone, the Slim got somewhere between 25-33dB when playing the game, and the PS3 Fat got between 22-30dB. It’s not a huge difference but still.

Physical comparison vs. original PS3

The shape is relatively unchanged, as you saw from the pics this morning, retaining the George Foreman grill top and the same ports on the back. We thought Sony shrunk it down by moving the PSU outside the body, like the Xbox 360, but no, it’s still the same. There’s no power brick.

Its power and eject touch buttons are changed to actual buttons (an improvement, I think), and the USB ports are shrunk down to 2. Also gone are any of the card readers. Because of the decreased size, the Slim is much less stable in vertical mode, which explains the $24 stand coming in September. You also can’t twist the PS logo on the front to vertical orientation, like you could the PS3 fat.

That is if you believe Jack Tretton

We really think that USD 299 is the sweet spot when consumers think about all the features that exist in the PlayStation 3. There’s just no better value on the market. We’re very pleased that short of its third birthday, the PlayStation 3 has achieved tremendous milestones which have allowed us to bring out this new form factor

A price drop has been the talk for over a year but nobody really imagined it would drop $100/€100. And the Introduction of the PS3 Slim makes the value of owning an original PS3 more and more rewarding (those with the card-reader, and 4 USB slots). We wonder what we can expect.

If you look at how far PlayStation 3 has come in terms of features, in terms of the great games that have been offered and to understand that’s being done at half the original price with a 120GB harddrive being built in, with a new slimmer lighter form factor. It’s staggering to think how far this has come in less than three years – and to envision how far it will go before this system is over and done with

In the near future, we may be seeing another SKU for the just announced PlayStation 3 Slim. Back in May, the FCC has a report on some PS3 SKU’s. Two being for retail release, and the other two for developers. Making us wonder when we’ll be seeing reported 250GB Slim. Possibly around the holidays? We’ll report back on when we hear news on this.

kmart ps3 slim reality

Everybody say this is probably the worst kept secret, and they’re probably right. On the website of Kmart ahead of Sony’s announcement at Gamescom, you can see this

That is correct, the PS3 slim has been given a release date of August 24th (for the US atleast). Though no spec details are currently known for the PS3 Slim, the only thing we’re certain about is the price of $299,99.

In a few hours we will hopefully have more information on Sony’s Gamescom presentation.

ps3slim051409 PS3 Slim manufacturers chosen
The rumor has been hanging around for quite some time that there is a PS3 Slim on the way. Now those rumors are getting worse as UDN.com has claimed that two Taiwanese manufacturing companies have been awarded contracts to make the new unit. The order has been split up in half with Taiwanese group Foxconn and Pegatron getting one slice each.

Why this rumor has a change of sticking, you ask? These two firms have manufactured the original PS3. So if this is true, Ars Technica might be right as well that the units will hit the market in August or September. Or we can just hope for the best

Both Sony and Toshiba are working on making a smaller chip, and plans on mass producing the 45nm chip, beginning of 2009. The end result is saving the power in PlayStation 3’s by 40%.

This also brings into wonder if Sony is also working on a PS3 slim, and maybe a price cut.

As usual, smaller chips mean less heat, less space, and more reliability.Engadget suggests that this new hardware revision could usher in a price cut and a PS3-slim model. All seems logically sound, though — even if the chips were produced early in the year — we still wouldn’t see the end product until late 2009 at the very earliest. So if you’ve been holding out for a PS3 until the slim comes into town … you’ve still got a long wait ahead of you buddy.
