No not your personal information but based on those SCEA was able to figure out what the typical (US) PSN user ‘looks’ like.

Right now [the userbase] it’s primarily male. The average age is 28 years old, in usually the middle- to higher-income range. They over-index against those with graduate degrees.

But it’s not sticking to this category alone, Eric Lempel who was SCEA’s spokesperson in this interview says

What we’re finding ever since we’ve introduced services like the video download service, we’re getting more of the household on the PlayStation Network. Some of the top rentals and sales on the video side have been content that probably doesn’t appeal exactly to that 28-year-old male. It’s more those movies that are geared toward women

We’re now waiting on the European and Japanese figures to get a global view of this.

psp go PSP without UMD was the plan from the start

Gamedivision.jp had an interview with Head of Product Planning for SCE, Naoya Matsui. In this interview he reveals that Sony were just waiting for the digital market to ‘mature’ a bit.

We wanted to release it when the delivery of digital content was on par with the delivery of physical media. That’s what we’ve been working on these past two years. We’ll be selling the PSP Go alongside the existing PSP models, because it’s a product targeted at those people who are more accustomed to digital content.

People still needed to get used to the digital format, but replacing an entire or atleast for now let it co-exist format will not go well with the people that stayed with an format deemed a failure from the start.

Talking about the hardware

We’d planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning. But if we’d simply released the hardware, there wouldn’t have been much for everyone to enjoy. We needed to prepare the right environment for it first, things like the transferral of content with the PS3 and PSN, and PC software to manage content like music and movies such as ‘Media Go

The content transferral is still not strong enough, especially in the SCEE region which is missing two important things which could have helped in measuring the popularity of digital downloads, those are the Video Store and PSN cards.

We hope Sony realises and do something about it before they launch the PSP Go!

After rumours and subtle hints Eric Lempel let know what feature we could expect from the next ‘big’ update.

By using a keyboard (on-screen or usb/bluetooth) or keypad, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 friends (16 including you) in your friend list (PlayStation’s version of MSN/AIM?). You will also be able to chat in three rooms at the same time and access Text Chat when playing a game.

But that’s not the only thing it’s bringing. You’ll also be able to sort your friends via their online status. Add to that a increase of file attachment to messages.
For the people in the US (or with a US PSN account), Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future. Also videos you’ve purchased for PlayStation Portable system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback.

Check the clip out, to see how you will be using these new features.

gametrailers logo
It sounds like competition for Qore in my ears but I’m probably wrong. Gametrailers TV will be coming to the PlayStation Video Store as the first video game TV show. They will show reviews, trailers and much more.

They’ll kick off their show with a visit to Sucker Punch studio, for the upcoming game inFAMOUS.

Check out the announcement for yourself after the break (more…)

David Reeves talked to The Guardian about the PlayStation business. As expected he sees the PlayStation branch to have it hard but it will bounce back strongly in the long-term.

It’s like Ali v Foreman – go eight or nine rounds and let him punch himself out. We’re still standing, we’re still profitable and there’s a lot of fight in us. I don’t say we will land a knock-out blow, but we’re there and we’re fighting

While keeping development on reducing PS3 component costs is a main focus the question about a price reduction keeps popping up every time.

If we’d cut the price, lost another billion dollars, we might have had a huge Christmas but it would have been followed by a huge loss. The company could have thought: ‘Hmm, I’m not sure I want to be in this business at all.’ But we’ve shown Sony this is still a good business to have

Admittedly, in the current climate, more people will go for the lower price, but we still make a profit and that is our objective

Reeves expects the PS3, to enter more homes as a home entertainment system by introducing more ‘non-game apps’.

We hope that he means the PlayStation Video Store which will become available to Europe before then year ends.

With Microsoft proud to announce that 1 millions Xbox Live users are using the Netflix service, PS3Center was quick to jump gun and let know how Sony is doing with the Video Store.

They summed it up like this:
No Double fee’s (No subscription fee and movie cost)
Faster download speeds
HD quality
Possible to take on the road via PSP or their portable device suing the flexible DRM.

One advantage Netflix has over Sony’s own Store is that it’s back catalogue is superior with older movies and great selections.

Beginning February, MTV and other properties will have over 200,000 hours of shows added to the PlayStation Networks Video Service. This was just announced in todays keynote at the Consumer Electronics show. This means everybody that has access to the Video Store will be able to purchase and download Spongebob Squarepants, reality shows and some classics.

“We’re thrilled to add content from MTV Networks to our line up, it’s a perfect fit for the PlayStation(R) demographic, one of the most coveted audiences in entertainment today,” said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and PlayStation Network, SCEA. “Combined with the superior technology of the PS3 and PSP, the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service truly provides consumers the best and most comprehensive content on demand from an incredible line up of entertainment brands to enjoy at home or on-the-go.”

“From Nickelodeon to TV Land and everywhere in between, MTV Networks’ brands feature some of the most popular shows and some of the hottest stars for almost every conceivable demo,” said Greg Clayman, Executive Vice President, Digital Distribution and Business Development, MTV Networks. “By making our diverse content lineup available through the PlayStation Network, we’re giving PlayStation users instant access to hundreds of hours of our very best programming in the comfort of their own living rooms.”

New shows will be available for download when available throughout Spring.

In a interview with Silicon Valley Insider, Susan Panico revealed that virtual goods are very popular in Home. Without giving any clear numbers the Senior PlayStation Network Director said

In Home’s first four days, virtual goods priced from 49 cents to $4.99 have generated more revenue for Sony than PS3 movies and video priced up to $14.99 generated in their first week. “It’s a classic 80/20 model, where 20 percent of your customers create 80 percent of your income

Does this simply mean that the Video Store didn’t do well in it’s first week or that the Home items were really selling despite all the complaining on the forums. The ‘hottest’ selling item in the shopping store was Santa outfit.

She also cleared up some the misunderstanding of the temporary disablement of the Voice support. It was done to help with a technical issue. And despite the Red Bull area being delayed till January we can expect more similar partnership deals in the Q1 of 2009.
With Sony long term goal for the PlayStation Network is to make the PlayStation 3 a replacement for cable boxes, we wonder if they will succeed.

SCEE President David Reeves talked to MCUK revealing some details.

The Limited 160GB SKU that will be released in Europe on October 31st will be see as a test device. After being forwarded messages about people wanting 500GB SKU’s but also some not being able to fill up 80GB units, they will use the 160GB SKU as market tool to measure the use of higher HDD capacity with their consumers.
This will really start playing an important role the moment PlayTV and an EU Playstation Video Store are available.

On other news he also said

There is no new news, and it’s completely on track. The closed beta has just ended and the open beta will launch in Autumn. Now when that will be announced, I’m not actually sure – we just didn’t have anything new to announce here. But it’s all on track and we have lots of third parties on board.

The closed beta ended? Does this mean that no invites are being send out until the open beta gets out or do they keep sending them?

But the good news is they have found more third parties to support HOME, hopefully they won’t charge us (too much) to use some features.
