Following the latest firmware announcement for the PlayStation Portable, Eric Lempel also announced the arrival of firmware 2.60 for the PlayStation 3. In this firmware the biggest additions are guest logins onto the PlayStation store and Divx 3.11 support.

But that’s not the only thing the update will include. Also included is a new Photo Gallery application. With this SCE is really focusing on getting the media side of the console to a proper level.
Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface.

To use the application you will need to install it separately from the XMB after the update, just like with PlayStation Home and Life with PlayStation.

And with this announcement the PSN ID required login has gone active but it seems it’s still having some issue. People’s original blog nickname are still being shown instead of their PSN ID. According to Eric Lempel their working on it.

We hope the firmware has more features (including the cosmetic error of the battery icon over the clock) and fixes.

It’s been a big issue in Europe and many say it’s hurting the image of Sony/PlayStation but a developer has spoken out on this ‘issue’. Were games like Socom: Confrontations and Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix don’t even have a date in Europe yet, we know from past games how they got released days later if not weeks. And it’s all because of Sony’s “varying regional processing”.

Capcom was not eager to comment on the issue, which they felt was best to be done by the console manufacturers according to them. But Joel De Young, COO Hothead Games did know where to point to finger.

And this is not the only issue there is. The talk of PSN cards keeps going but it seems there is no activity from SCEE’s side. Many PS3 owners in the PAL region don’t own credit cards. Why? They are either under-aged and don’t have permission from their parents. Or they simply don’t want to take a risk with a credit card. A missed opportunity according to many.

Though it might not be as bad as it looks out of the 78 PSN Originals on the North American Store, 65 also appeared on the European store. Disregarding obvious American exclusives, such as NFL Score Charts and games based on American TV Shows, only nine games are still exclusive to the US PSN.

A Sony PSN rep did however comment to Britishgaming.co.uk saying

This has been an ongoing issue and were doing our best to resolve it

Do you feel as a European resident that things will change? We believe it won’t atleast in the next two years.

According to the schedule that VG247 have acquired, the games release date is marked for February 19th.

Flower is a PSN exclusive being developed by ThatGameCompany, the same developers that made flOw on the PSN. You go around and explore and interact around you with the use of SIXAXIS and a press of any button.

The goals and journey in each level vary, but all involve flight, exploration and interaction with the worlds presented to you.  Using simple SIXAXIS wireless controls and by pressing any button, the player controls the lead petal and accumulates a swarm of flower petals as he moves at his own pace within the environment, causing the on-screen world to change.  Flower’s gameplay offers different experiences, pacing and rhythm to all players.  Along the way, the environment will pose challenges to the player’s progress.

VG247 has got a list of upcoming release schedule for the PlayStation Network. VidZone is contained on that list and scheduled to be available for download on June 4th. VidZone is a service where you can stream music videos on the PlayStation 3 for free, and only available for Europe.

You’ll also be able to stream the music while playing your games. Which sounds to be a neat feature.

In this month’s installment of Qore, the e-magazine will contain info on Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, and F.E.A.R. 2. The incentives included in the magazine is a Killzone 2 theme, and a Qore exclusive F.E.A.R. 2 Demo.

It sounds to pack a punch with this month’s magazine. Qore will be available for download in tomorrow’s North American PlayStation Store update.

metal gear online 05 European PlayStation Store update, December 24th 2008

One day later then the North American store update, but with a lot of goodies, the delay from yesterday seems to be already forgotten by most people as the highly anticipated LittleBigPlanet Pack is out. There is no pack that includes the costumes and level so you will have to purchase them both separately.
Also out is Savage Moon, a frantic, action-packed tower defense game in a gritty sci-fi setting. Expect to see the WipeOut HD and Metal Gear Online demo’s on there (expect an event from us soon) as well as the latest Buzz add-on and some special seasonal offers. Check the full list out after the break.
