Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: World at War will feature online co-op for up to four players. not only that but World at War will offer two player split screen co-op.

Activision have released a press for Call of Duty World at War and says:

“We’re excited to give players a host of new enemies that employ entirely new tactics, as well as new, groundbreaking tools – like co-op and the flamethrower – to succeed in the epic fight.”

“For the first time ever players will experience harrowing single-player missions together for greater camaraderie and tactical execution. The co-op campaign allows players to rank up and unlock perks in competitive multiplayer by completing challenges and earning experience points, adding continuous re-playability and team-based gameplay.”

This is great news as it will be the first Call of Duty game to feature co-op mode and we all know how good playing through the Resistance campaign with a pal was.

Thats right, there will now no longer be a number in the title. So Call of Duty: World at War will be called just that with no number 5 in the name.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Noah Heller, the senior producer said:

“We’re getting rid of the number in Call of Duty for a very specific reason. It’s because we want you to know that when you’re playing Call of Duty: World at War you’re playing the best shooter, the best WW2 game ever. Likewise when you’re playing Modern Warfare, likewise when you play any game that will be called Call of Duty.”

Another good thing about removing numbers is because i think the Call of Duty series has a long way to go and Call of Duty 14 just won’t sound right.

According to Senior producer Noah Heller, Call of Duty 5 has to redefine the World War II genre and be the best shooter out there. If COD5 is as good as COD4 if not better then it has a really good chance at being the ‘best’ out there.

“The game built great fertile ground for us to start on and if we’re going to say: ‘Look it’s Christmas, here’s another Call of Duty as you loved it last year’, then we need to make sure the game is high quality or people won’t trust what Call of Duty is.”

Noah Heller went on to say:

“This has to be the best shooter and has to redefine the World War II genre.”

But will a World War II setting work well even if its run on the same COD4 engine that is probably the best first person shooter engine. With me i loved COD4 because it was more modern, in fact i liked COD4 the best because the others were in a World War II setting.

Anyway i guess we will find out when the game is out or is shown at E3.

New details and information have been revealed regarding the next Call of Duty, Call of Duty 5. The name given to the fifth game is Call of Duty: World at War.

This months issue of the gamesTM magazine have revealed more information and thanks to VG247 reader evilashchris who has read the magazine says:

“Right, apparently it’s going to be grittier, as gritty as ANY game out there to quote. The enemy will be scarier and use new tactics.”

“There will be co-op for the first time in a Call of Duty. Also there will be vehicles and squad-based elements to the multiplayer.”

“The opening scene of the first level we are shown is a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat – the blood splatters and dribbles down the side of the tent you are being held in. He turns towards you to deal out the same treatment but help arrives just in time. Cue a daring level-long escape.”

How nasty does that sound! But overall Call of Duty 5 sounds good with the use of vehicles and co-op for the first time. It sounds as if its moving into the Battlefield vision. Guess we will see more in the coming weeks or months.
