Ever wondered why Final Fantasy went multiplatform? This will tell us why. The following is not worldwide, but Japan only.
In 2007, Square Enix racked up a whopping 6.4 million with 22 releases across 5 systems (DS, PSP, PS2, Wii, 360). 2008 is here and almost over and it hasn’t been a great year for the Japanese company. Square Enix released 10 titles across 4 systems (DS, PSP, Wii, 360) and this resulted in selling 1.7 million units, a massive 4.5 million down from 2007.
One thing that’s interesting is the fact that the PS2 wasn’t on the list for 2008, did that impact sales? Did Square Enix make Final Fantasy multiplatform because of this?

Sure it was always about finances. As it is/ was with Tekken 6, VF5, Assassins Creed, GTA4 etc… I reckon Square-Enix think this is a wise move for them (particularly now with Japan in recession). What irks me about this is that Sony seem to think this is not a loss for them. Eg/ they did not even attempt to get FFXVIII (or any other exclusive it has lost) as a timed exclusive. B/c at the end of the day there is little reason for many people to buy the more expensive PS3 if all these big franchises go multiplatform. Another question that needs to be raised is why is it that Microsoft have not lost any of its exclusives to Sony? Why is that Sony? I
Sony has spent a lot of money on making the PS3. When it first came out they sold it for almost $200 less than what it cost to make it. This means that they don’t have any money to buy exclusive rights from companies. So instead of spending money to do that, they’re counting on new games created by 1st and 2nd party devolpers to work just as well.
And that was a mistake…
IF THIS MEANS THAT KINGDOM HEARTS 3 WILL BE MULTIPLATFORM THAN THEY HAVE JUST SEALED THEIR DEATHS!!!
maybe they should have released at least one game on the ps3 and they wouldnt have bee so bad off…
