Sony messed up, so what

A TalkPlaystation.com user sent me the following to post. It basically argues that why people made the firmware 2.4 bug a big deal and how its happened to Microsoft with their Dashboard update.

“Should we trust Sony with their next Firmware update? Presumebly it will be firmware 2.41 that will be released next just to reasure Playstation 3 owners they havent got a dodgy firmware.

I’m sure Sony will be careful next time, just as careful as they should have been when they released 2.4 and then took it offline due to reports saying that it ‘bricked’ their PS3. The majority of people upgraded to 2.4 with no problems at all and are happily trophy hunting.

I think we can trust Sony because Microsoft, Nintendo and now Sony have screwed up when updating their systems. Remember when Microsoft updated the Dashboard and it screwed poeples 360’s, producing lag etc. The effect was very minimal and people have a go at Sony for a quick bug that is most likely fixed.

People are just exaggerating because Sony pulled it down because they wanted to see if there really was a problem. If your PS3 got bricked due to firmware 2.4 all you need to do is format the hard drive, yes you will lose all your data but its the only way to get your PS3 back.

Not everyone update will be perfect. Besides its Sony’s first BIG update.”

[UPDATE] As Paranoimia stated in the comments section “A very small minority have experienced problems with the update, while most people had no problems whatsoever.”

“It may well be that a minority of people have been affected in some way, but I’d put money on a lot of the internet talk being from Xbots who have picked up on this minority and decided to blow it out of all proportion”

Whats your say on this?

I agree with this user. A very small minority have experienced problems with the update, while most people had no problems whatsoever. My PS3 is an original 60GB unit, with the HDD upgraded to 320GB… and I updated with no problems.

If you read the official PlayStation forums, there are people complaining about their PS3’s being “broken” - or claiming that something no longer works - after every single firmware update.

It may well be that a minority of people have been affected in some way, but I’d put money on a lot of the internet talk being from Xbots who have picked up on this minority and decided to blow it out of all proportion.

I have to agree with you there Paranoimia, it seems that everyone pushes so hard to make Sony look bad.

[Reply to this comment]

check all the online polls (including this one) and you will find only a few people have had the issue…

if anything check the PlayStation forums.. even when a tiny update is pushed someone immediately jumps on talking about the updates bricking their console

i was able to get my 2.4 update at 11:45 PM (15 minutes prior to the scheduled release) the night of the scheduled update

it downloaded, installed and to this date i have had no issues (knock on wood)

[Reply to this comment]

Well said. Everyone makes mistakes, but what matters is how you fix them. This firmware update issue was completely blown out of proportion.

[Reply to this comment]

The Playstation 3 is going to have a magnificent push this year, i think xbots are just trying to find any little problem with the system to push it down.

[Reply to this comment]

Interesting how different the responses are between consoles.

When a tiny minority of Microsoft console owners report any issue whatsoever it gets blown up as a massive issue damning the entire console. Update messed up the console? DEFECTIVE UNIT WRAP A TOWEL AROUND IT AND SEND IT BACK BILL GATES IS EVIL!!!

Sony borks what should have been the most monumental improvement to the console since launch, and no big fuss. Update messed up the console? Just reformat, try the update again, and check the forums. It’ll all be fine.

How many of the same people saying this issue is just water under the bridge were all over Microsoft when (insert issue)? You’re hypocrites, and you know it.

Sony took Firmware 2.40 off the servers wayyyy to fast, maybe just MAYBE they were aware of some problems with it before the release

[Reply to this comment]

@Antihero20
Yeah Jack Ass, thats why they would put it up, because they knew there was a problem and wanted some people to get their systems bricked…
Maybe you should think about your posts a little before you click “submit”

Come one people, how many times has MS screwed up and we all trashed them and said “ha ha rrod machine strikes again”
So now Sony screws up and we think we need to defend them? Get real, no one defends MS when they screw up and they are the underdogs, so why do we think we need to defend Sony, for screwing over thousands?

[Reply to this comment]

First off any butt nugget that uses the term “xbot” in his comment should be removed because they will obviously not be able to comment with any form of objectivity.

Second, why would you post a second hand hearsay response from a fanboy and ask other fanboys what do they think. If you have any experience with Sony fanboys, you already know what the answer is.

Jeez

XBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS!

Xbot is for the now like ‘Nerd’ was for the 80’s; it rolls off of the tongue well.

Sony Sheep is too long to both say and type, so that’s a week insult.

Wii-tard is also very good, especially since you can find people with black-eyes from the Wiimote: it makes you seem so dumb that inanimate objects can kick your @$$.

[Reply to this comment]

Okay, what about ps3-tard

[Reply to this comment]

@hypocrite_am_i

Thank you, finally someone what can see the other side of things.

[Reply to this comment]

LMFAO!!! Wii-Tard! lol. Funny Shyt. But naa SONY’s the shyt they “heard” there were problems nd they were like ok we got dis, its all good. But Microsoft hears nd keeps on hearing about the problems they most likely new about already nd they’re like (Retarted Dee Dee Dee Mencia accent) “uuuhh ok guyz we cant fizx tis, uhhh u gonna need to zsend it bach nnd we’ll zsee wat we can do…. lol. So stop pretendin lozers. Effin Xbots.

[Reply to this comment]

PS3-Tard?!?!?! If dat was gud i woulda excepted it but dat was horrible, go kill urself.

I think it has been a bit blown out of porporation but at the same time I have been Minorly affected by the Update. I thought everything was fine and my Machine hasn’t been completly bricked. My biggest Problem is that sometimes when I start my Machine it starts up but then says something like “Cannot Find Correct Hardrive” All I have to do though is get up and hold down the Power Button and it usually fixes it once I restart it. Also at one point it did start up only to show the wave and didn’t go any further but after I restarted it, it booted up correctly. I am hoping firmware 2.41 fixes the problem because I am starting to get worried. BTW I have a 60GB U.S. PS3 that I upgraded to 320GB.

Did sony mess up with 2.40? My answer would be no. I was one of the first people i know who updated to 2.40, it was like my birthday and christmas all rolled up into one. I waited eagerly as my update downloaded and installed, i done even have a computer, my sony Ps3 is my media hub, so im sure you understand how bad i wanted this update. As soon as i was able to i started playing with the xmb in each game i own.(it worked perfectly with no lag in any of my games. I started messaging my friends while i was in a game, also worked fine, and last but not least i went trophy hunting in super stardust HD. All together i played for 8 hours straight, with not one problem, not even a studder. To those who experienced a problem, im sorry, but did sony mess up with 2.40? Absolutley not, and once again, sorry haters. KingGreenz

[Reply to this comment]

holy crap KingGreenz… take some freaking English classes first before you ever make another post again please. Also, yes they did mess up w/2.40 that’s why they pulled it & released 2.41 you ignorant fool. Just because you didn’t have any problems with it doesn’t mean no one else did & the firmware update was perfect you moron…

[Reply to this comment]

@ oohwii - not a fanboy, just someone who has no faith in MS after the problems I had with my original Xbox. Last gen, I owned a PS2, Xbox and Gamecube. Numerous problems with the Xbox meant I avoided the 360, and I have no regrets over that decision. I often play on a friend’s 360, but I’ve no wish to own one myself.

As for the use of ‘Xbot’ - well, it’s just another term for ‘Microsoft fanboy’, but it’s easier to type. Referring to me as a fanboy is exactly the same thing, so I can only assume you’re a fellow “butt nugget”.

[Reply to this comment]

Lol. See, the difference is Sony pulled back 2.4 and fixed it as quick as possible.

What did Microsoft do? They had to get sued before they “willingly” helped replace RRODed 360s. By the way, did I mention a kid died from a fire directly caused by a 360 power supply? True story.

Everybody I know who has a 360 is slowly migrating towards the PS3 because of RROD, or poor customer service by Microsoft. I guess Xbox Live is not good enough to make up for this… and its not even free.

I have respect for the 360 and its owners. But you guys made me do this. ^_^

Not every PS3 will contain the same files on the hard drive as everybody updates their firmware revision to a later release upon different days at different times & perhaps skipping one or more revisions along the way. You may well have upgraded to every subsequent firmware release, but another user may have jumped from, say, version 1.60 (or earlier) to 2.40, without anything in-between. Some users even visit the PlayStation Store in a different region [so I believe ;)] & download content that may contain characters & symbols not found on their native console that could cause issues.

Not every PS3 owner has the same set of game titles & the associated “save game” data. Different PS3 consoles will have downloaded different PlayStation Store content (videos, themes, wallpapers, music, and so on).

Some people may never have visited the PlayStation Network Store or even played an online game! Some consoles have had one (or more) Linux variant(s) installed. Some do not.

One PS3 console may only be used to watch Blu-ray movies titles (that store data on the hard drive), whereas another PS3 console may never have played any Blu-ray movies at all.

Not everybody has used the “Network” / “Information Board” &/or the integral Web Browser, or even the “Friends List” messaging functions. The content on any of the many millions of possible web sites available that could be visited may well still be resident on the console’s hard drive.

A number of consoles will have had PlayStation Eye, SingStar microphones, third party keyboards, PSP console(s), and/or any number of other USB devices, USB hubs, and/or memory card readers plugged into them. Each of these devices requires hardware driver support that will create different files on the console’s hard drive. Some consoles may never have had any USB peripherals attached (apart from the USB-to-SIXAXIS controller recharge cable).

Bluetooth device configurations may exist on one console, but not on another.

Consoles that may have ‘crashed’ previously may have left temporary system files on the hard drive that were not deleted as the system was not closed down properly.

All these examples of “system administrative data” form the basis of an extensive test plan that cannot possibly encompass all the permutations that may be encountered without taking many years to plan, formulate, execute, & review..

Sony will, I presume, engage a “best efforts” basis in testing a vast majority of typical installations with firmware revisions, but it is impractical to assume that they can make provision for absolutely every possible case of every perceivable combination of a console’s hard drive contents.

To their credit, they acted quickly in removing the offending firmware (2.40) update file. The decision to do so will not have been taken likely, not least due to the backlash they would receive & the impact to their reputation & revenue (having to re-visit the code, re-test to find the fault(s), re-code & provide remedial action, re-test, & re-issue the firmware to their download servers), but this has to be balanced against the damage to the organisation (and the associated costs in compensation) if they failed to take action.

The re-issue of the firmware (2.41) happened in less than a week (spread across a weekend & a national holiday period in the US), throughout all global regions (with issues relating to localised language support). I think they should be commended on their turn-around time instead of being harangued for the initial issue.

Granted, everybody remembers something that is faulty & everybody is entitled to criticise actions (or lack of them) if they are a consumer who has paid for a service that is not delivering as advertised. From my computer software testing background it is my opinion that it is better to deliver a week late & get the product right rather than deliver on time to the detriment of sufficient testing. In the long term the over-run of a week will be nowhere near as memorable as if the delivery schedule was kept but the product did not perform as expected. Nobody remembers a late product… Everybody remembers a broken one!

Cases such as this just demonstrates why local regions may differ in functionality or supported features as the PS3 brand diversifies. The risk of having all regions fail concurrently would be too much to cope with in an acceptable timescale, and releasing new functionality to a limited audience (with a limited number of potential failures) is good, practical business sense.

I would not be surprised if there is not a firmware release of this scale for some time as I would hope lessons were learned regarding ensuring adequate testing is undertaken. To some extent I hope Sony did not bow to consumer pressures about constant enquiries about “in-game XMB” being available as rushing to meet a deadline can mean mistakes are made &/or corners are cut.

I do think they could have improved on communications channels to each registered PlayStation Network Id though, but to date it has not been the case that Sony makes consumers personally aware of every new firmware revision so it may not be in their business plan to advise the same set of customers in the event of a problem.

This aside, it does make you wonder what is going to be available in the next firmware milestone of version 3.00, and whether this will be the collaborative selection of features from the next 12 months of user comments.

Again, with hindsight, it is easy to criticise the apparent after-thought of the provision of the in-game XrossMediaBar integration, and/or or the support for game achievement ratings in the form of “Trophies”. We do not know if any foundations were laid prior to the first firmware release, or within subsequent firmware revisions. It may well have only just been possible to deliver this functionality at this time due to the increased understanding of the set of tools the Sony representatives have had available to work with.

One thing is for sure, though… the PlayStation 4 is going to be worth waiting for! :)
