Sony Hit With Another Lawsuit

Orinda Intellectual Properties USA, has filed a lawsuit against Sony for infringing on Blu-Ray related patents.

Here’s what Edge got details on the lawsuit:

In an August 20 court filing obtained by Edge, Orinda alleged that Sony infringed on patent number 5,438,560, which in broad terms describes methods for recording and reproducing information via optical disc.

Orinda wants a jury trial, asking for a injunction on the manufacturing, sales and distribution on all Blu-Ray devices, including the PlayStation 3. They are also asking for a “reasonable royalty.”

What is the communities thoughts on this? Even though this wasn’t the first time Sony was sued over the Blu-Ray patents.

I want to know how it is that these people/companies always go after Sony, when NINE companies developed Blu-ray: Sony, Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung.

Was Sony like the leader though?

Paranoimia Reply:

Sony are often cited as the ‘leaders’, but the group have to agree on the technology as a whole entity - i.e. the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association).

Therefore any ‘infringements’ - if there are any - must surely be shared by all those responsible. After all, I’m sure they’re all taking an equal share of the rewards.
