A lot of developers criticise the Playstation 3’s Blu-Ray player reading too slow. The fact of the matter is that the PS3 has the fastest Blu-Ray player to date. The Japanese have put 2nd generation BD recorder, 3rd generation standalone Blu-Ray players and the PS3’s Blu-Ray player on test. The PS3 came out on top in terms of loading times.

Title in test : Men in Black
Sony PS3: 43 seconds
Sony BDP-S350:66 seconds
Sony BDP-S5000ES:67 seconds
Sony BD Recorder : BDZ-T50: 80 seconds
Sony BD Recorder : BDZ-X100:81 seconds

Not sure about constantly streaming content from these players but that is where the PS3 fails most according to game developers.

Loading a BD movie often has more to do with CPU power than disc read speed. BD disc menus and interactive layers use Java, which on slower CPUs (as you would find in a standalone BD player) take some time to interpret and run.

BD read time *is* an issue for game developers, where they need to stream data from the disc as quickly as possible. Every BD player has a slower read time than a modern DVD drive, hence why PS3 games often install critical data to the hard drive. Other games use techniques such as billboarding to hide BD load time lag.

As PS3 game sales catch up to 360 game sales more devs will develop to the lowest common denominator – BD read speed – and so build games around that lower read speed and not the 360’s quicker data rates.

Know that Doom9 cracked the BD security, the real question is… The PS3 can run copied BD movies or games??

  • That is interesting that the PlayStation is fast. I spent a lot of time reading about it and other players on the weekend, I do not know much about blu-ray and was trying to learn about it and write a couple of simple pages for beginners (like myself.)

I know the standalone units have come down a lot in price and wonder if you would buy the PS3 if you were not a gamer? If not, what would your choice be?

I would be thrilled if you would visit my page and let me know what you think. You can find it at http://www.squidoo.com/blu-rayplayer.
