Fully robust Home coming this fall

The Playstation Home Beta is still on schedule for release later this fall. Home has been delayed a number of times before but Eric Lempel, Director of Playstation Network was keen to assure Playstation fans that Home would be worth the long wait.

“The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall,”

“The reason we’ve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won’t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”

So it looks like everything is on course to be released this fall in Beta format. Read more at next-gen.biz.

Some new Alpha Protocol details

New details of Alpha Protocol have emerged, an upcoming third-person action RPG, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Sega.

This game looks pretty good and is a one to keep your eye on if you like secret agent games like James Bond.
Alpha Protocol is not a first person shooter, its a third-person RPG set in a world of spy and secret agents rather than fantasy.

“Both main and side missions will have more than one way of being completed. While this is nothing new to games, Obsidian has but their own spin on things. The different possibilities will depends on how a player has made their choices up until that point.”

Design Producer Nathan Davis says:

“In particular, a lot of the little thing you do will show up in the end game,”

“It will show up depending on who you ally with and what factions are friendly with you, they may come in and help or hinder your ability to finish the end mission.”

Weapons in Alpha Protocol are what you expect them to be and Alpha Protocol will have no shortage. You can play through the game with just hand to hand combat but chances are you will run into a nice rifle.

Executive Producer Chris Parker says:

“He will also have close-quarters hand-to-hand combat, which can be lethal,”

“And of course, gadgets,”

Lastly lets talk about the unique dialog system as Parker explains:

“The new system is an evolution of the systems going way back on games that we have worked on. Everything from (Planescape) Torment to Icewind Dale through KOTOR 2 and Neverwinter (Nights) 2,”

“It’s becoming more personal and the production values are improving.”

Basically Alpha Protocol will use an evolved version of what they used in Neverwinter Nights 2. I can imagine this game looking a lot like Mass Effect.

If your waiting for a kick ass action RPG this is the one to wait for. Read more over at Game Informer.

Playstation Network is staying free

Many Playstation 3 owners are wondering whether Sony will start charging for the Playstation Network. Eric Lempel, Director of Playstation Network said this to reassure you:

“We’re happy with what we’re doing right now and we’re going to stick with it. I think being free is always an advantage. The fact that it’s free is nice for consumers who want to try out the online experience, those who may be new to it and may not be ready to commit to spending dollars, and that’s a really good message for us.”

So yes, it will be free and free for a long time to come.

Firmware 2.4 is not back online

There is a report going round saying that Firmware 2.4 has been put back online and ready to download again. This is false news because i’ve just tried it myself and told other people to try and no success.

“The 2.4 firmware for the PS3 has been put back onto the servers so download it if you have not done so yet. Hopefully this means they got most of the problems fixed and running fine!!!”

If you head over to the ‘version check‘ page you will see that version 2.36 is still online. This page exists so the PS3 can check and compare the installed firmware version against it. If the numbers are different it will download the latest version.

Dest=84;CompatibleSystemSoftwareVersion=2.3600-;

Another reason why this is false news is because there has been no mention from Sony on their blog. A lot of people in forums are saying its false news.

See the story here.

If you didn’t download 2.4 is it available for you to download now?

New Resistance 2 details

Insomniac Games have revealed some new information on their upcoming first person shooter, Resistance 2. Basically they said that while creating the new big monster, named Leviathan, they had to think about the surrounding areas and extend the range that the engine displays. Levels are now much bigger and in scope and draw space compared to Resistance: Fall of Man.

Resistance 2 high res_02-07-08_02

There’s going to be new content shown at E3 that they’ve never shown before and will show 60 players online multiplayer for the first time. When they show the 60 player online mode, the players will be employee’s from both Sony and Insomniac Games from their offices, they are going to do this so they can get the numbers online.

Insomniac Games says that what you’ve already seen of Resistance 2, when the full game is released it will look a lot better.

“What you’ve seen earlier on is only gonna get better”

Cinematics are starting to be finalised and look really good. They answered a question they get asked a lot and that is; how do they do their cinematics? They build the enviroments and go down to the motion capture studios, get all the actors they need and basically act out the scene in physical space thats approximated from the enviroments they created.

Once captured they hand it over to the animators back at the Insomniac Games studio, animate their faces and hands so it works in the game. After that they add effects, enviromental effects, sound effects and export those frame by frame to make them into MPEGS, the reason they do it in MPEGS is for level load coverage. The cinematics are from the games engine but captured in MPEGs for level load coverage. To make this sound a bit simpler, it WAS in-game but is captured at the end of the day and is used as an MPEG to cover the levels loading.

“It was in-game but now its captured”

“Its the same, the user will never really tell the difference”

Thats all the information. Check out their podcast and make sure your at E3 to see brand new content in Resistance 2.

Resistance 2 will be released this fall.

Kojima to think about Metal Gear Solid 5

After many reports saying that Metal Gear Solid 4 is the last in the series. Fear not, Hideo Kojima himself has stated that he has got to think about Metal Gear Solid 5.

Kojima said:

“I gotta start thinking about MGS5… Even though, well, Snake’s story ends in MGS4. …About MGS5, that would be something that Kojima Productions would have to make, I think.”

Previous statements from Ryan Payton suggested that there will be a MGS5 but not with Solid Snake as Snake’s story ends in MGS4.

My opinion is that yes there will be a Metal Gear Solid 5 but Solid Snake won’t be in the game. Raiden anyone?
