Metacritic’s First Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Reviews: Ouch!

LucasArt’s most ambitious gaming project to-date is the soon to be released Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for PS3, XBox 360, Wii and other platforms. After fours years of waiting - from concept to completion - and multiple delays, the long-awaited game is the first next-gen development by the small studio. It is the first to utilize multiple new technologies as well as the direct input of Industrial Light and Magic.

However, is the Force truly being Unleashed? Baring all of the above in mind, it comes as a slight surprise to find what print media is saying about the game. Having bagged four reviews, Force Unleashed only managed to grab a meta score of 6.8, with individual publication scores ranging from a mediocre 7.5 all the way down to a pitiful 56.

Coming in at first place with a score of 7.5 is Official Xbox Magazine which has this to say:

With its non-branching storyline and no multiplayer, Force Unleashed is certainly less ambitious than the classic “Jedi Knight” games - and ultimately, its design makes it feel more videogame-y and less of an all-engrossing Star Wars experience than XBox entries like “Jedi Knight II” or “Jedi Academy.” But when the game is on, it’s on.

Force Unleashed received a 70 from both Games and GamePro magazine, citing that there is fun to be had but the hack-and-slash gameplay is redundant.

Electronic Gaming Monthly’s 56 comes in at last place with one simple, albeit powerful, quote: “An ambitious-yet ultimately dissatisfying-effort.” For comparison, EGM is basically saying that Force Unleashed is not much better than The Incredible Hulk per Metacritic’s scores. Ouch!

As for those die-hard Star Wars game fans out there, you may want to tone down your expectations a notch… or two.
