After browsing the Gametrailers.com forum i found a decent image that shows Killzone 2 from E3 2005 against Killzone 2 from Playstation Day 2008. The results are shockingly amazing, this is very, very close.
Take a look at the image:
If you take a good close look at the comparison you can see that Killzone 2 2008 has the clearer picture with far better colours and lighting effects. It just has an overall slicker look. I know what your going to say now… the E3 2005 looks better in motion…
Ok, maybe it does, because CG is meant to look better than actual engine video. Take a look at this comparison video where it compares Killzone 2 from E3 2005 against Killzone 2 from E3 2007. Please note that the video from E3 2007 is running in real time on the PS3.
The comparison is very close, you would need a magnifying glass to see any real difference.
Your thoughts?

Nice comparison. Although I think there are just so many thing that differentiate the two (E3 05 CGI vs Now real time), its not just black and white.
Overall though the CGI will always be better, but it doesn’t matter because the real time has gotten so close people who have never seen either would get CGI / real time mixed up.
But the point is, whether one is better from the other or not, that Killzone 2 has reached a true milestone technically for video games. And the most frightening thing of all is that it is NOT on a PC, but on a console. PC is more of a limitless platform, new graphics cards, better graphics. It all is at a cost though.
So for this game, at this level of graphics (which is setting a whole new bar), its amazing for it to be on a console. And is a real glimpse into the future of PS3 games in general.
Still a good comparison though, you do mention some key differences here.
I can’t wait for the final game, and how much better it will look compared to what it is at now.

There’s absolutely no point of comparison. The level of facial and overall polygonal and texture detail, not mentioning animations and physics is immensely superior in the E3 2005 video.
However, I must admit Guerrilla has achieved a remarkable visual level with Killzone 2.
It will be interesting how this game compared to the soon to be released Gears of War 2 footage.
I don’t believe Gears 2 will have much, if anything on this.
Of course every time a new game is debuted with gameplay (mainly when its a big game) everyone goes crazy, just as they did with KZ2 at E3 2007. So when the gameplay releases for Gears of War 2 today I am sure its going to be awesome and everyones going to love it.
But from seeing a gameplay screenshot, it looked very much like Gears 1 graphically, and many others agreed so. It will look great, but the Unreal Engine is just not as good as Killzone 2 from what I have seen.
Just my opinion but time will tell.
I think Aquanox is highly mistaken. The facial animations, textures, and details for the KZ2 2008 footage is superior to the 05 footage. The comparison video on this site is of the ‘05 & ‘07 footage, of which the ‘05 still had the edge. But the recent footage is improved since ‘07 and the game now looks even better than the CGI did.
you idoit the gametrailer Comparison was made last year E32007, the game came along way since then and it looks Incredible.
woo can you not read? The article clearly specifies that the comparison video is from E3 2007 with Playstation Day video underneath it.
Aquanox are you confusing the screenshots the facial detail and textures are miles better in the realtime game footage. look at the top of the screen shots the ones on the right saying work in progress are the 2008 stuff and the textures clearly out do the cgi
“Woo”, I think you are the idiot, learn to read next time before calling someone who took the time to write an article and compare the two for us gamers.
Anyways, I think conclusion here is that if you look at the differences [graphically] between the E3 2007 footage, and the footage from PlayStation Day 2008, there is a pretty large difference.
The time between then (July) and now (May) is roughly the same as the time it will be from now till it comes out (February 09).
So expect to see that much of a difference again, if not more. Oh yea, MP will be shown soon so I can’t wait for that!
I honestly prefer the ‘08 footage. It isn’t as…Brown. They seem to have used a full color pallet.

Currently, Killzone 2 looks better than the trailer in both colors and graphical capability. The facial animation for Rico in the ‘08 trailer actually startled me when he said “time to die!”
Why hasn’t anyone done an ‘08 vs ‘05 comparison yet?
I mean as far as running video, not screenshots.
I love the lighting engine Guerrilla has created for KZ2. I like the dark atmosphere they put to the Helghan world, and when they put the light to each building, whew! It is quite something, if you know what I mean.
GEARS2 baby whoohoow hell yeah…!!!
killzone3. looks promising, i heard that the campaign was a little short but if there is a good MP too back it up, and i have the chance to try it…
i would definitly buy a console just for 1 good title,

Don’t get artistic assets confused with technical capability. Technically the trailer is much more impressive. Higher contrast != superior. With a little colour adjustment on top, the 05 trailer would be much more dramatic, brown as it is.
The things I notice most, technically, between the two are lack of self shadows, nothing is really volumetric(look at the billboard clipping on explosions and lack of modeling in the smoke) and an overall sense that what’s lacking in realism is made up for in contrast(a la Gears of War). I guarantee the textures, models, facial animation targets… everything in the pre-rendered trailer is higher definition than the final product.
That having been said, it’s agreeably impressive, and nothing I’ve seen so far seems to have the sense of immersion KZ2 is purporting.
