PSFocus.nl went to Guerrilla Games office in Amsterdam and could confirm that there would definitely be downloadable content for Killzone 2.

Though they could not get any info on what it would be, you would quickly think about new maps, game modes or weapons. Also no luck on a precise day or month.

Guerrilla Games had really sealed there mouth on any info on the future DLC pack. We will keep you posted once we receive more information.

Hmm… this is the kind of thing that annoys me. As much as I’m looking forward to KZ2, if it’s ‘ready to go’, this DLC should really be included with the game, and not used to bleed more money out of people within weeks of the launch.

I’ve no objection to paying for DLC that adds significantly to a game (i.e. new modes of play), or for stuff that’s clearly been developed after the initial game. But this kind of thing smacks of stuff that’s been developed as part of the main game, and removed simply to be sold to people as ‘extra content’ a little later, for a bit more cash.

True indeed. I do hope that the first DLC of the ‘announced’ three will be free.

But I have to agree that if it’s added soon after it should have been added to the game from the start. It can also be that the part included I the DLC would have delayed the project even further and they choose to focus on the ‘main’ game. Then send the QA after it to polish it up here and there and let the programmers focus on the next part.

the game has been finished for 3 months if you remember they held it back for resistance 2 and tweaking. Magazines have had final code for the last 2 months so it’s a good thing that the team have been keeping busy with DLC. Whether it’s free or not isn’t really the issue. stop moaning.

    • Paranoimia says:

Killzone 2 only ‘went gold’ on January 21, so while magazines have had copies to review for some time, it wasn’t necessarily the final version.

As you say, we don’t know yet whether this will be free or chargeable; I’m not ‘moaning’, just saying that it’s a practise I’m not in favour of. My second paragraph above refers to games and DLC in general, not KZ2 specifically. Criterion have had the best approach to DLC with Burnout Paradise – some free, some paid, all great. I hope Guerilla take a leaf out of their book.

I will by all means get the game and any DLC that come.

I have to agree with Paranoimia here. I’ve lost faith in downloadable content recently, mostly thanks to the extortionate LittleBigPlanet and Home costume add-ons. To me, DLC that requires payment should satisfy the following:

    (i) It should be developed after the release of the main game (or after the gold date), justifying its absence from the original game.

(ii) It should not be a feature that was missing from the original game that obviously should have been there, but was missed due to time constraints/laziness whatever (for example, if LBP ever gets the picture importer, this should be free, since it was advertized early on and missed)

(iii) It should be a feature that adds something significant to the game (entire tracks, arenas, levels or stories, rather than just a new t-shirt for a character).

(iv) The cost should reflect the approximate relationship between the original development cost and release content (meaning that a level in the original release was, say, 0.01% of the effort involved in the game creation, so the cost of a DLC level should be 0.01% of the game’s original price, plus some allowance for Playstation Store overheads).

That lot should mean that DLC is meaningful and priced correctly. Instead, we’re seeing rafts of pre-prepared DLC items including costumes and pieces of furniture (mere pixels that probably took almost no effort whatsover for the devs compared with the masterpieces seen elsewhere) which are highly expensive.

It’d be tempting to tell me “well you don’t have to buy it then”, and the answer to that is simply that I don’t and won’t, but that I’m still able to criticise the appalling pricing that has recently been adopted. It seems like a product of the “free” Playstation network, perhaps.
