I simply can’t believe it! I’ve just finished the main story… could have made that in 1080p if only I had read this before.

the game is ran at 720p or 480p upscaled, still looks not that great, but what can be 1080p is just the hud display. sorry people. the box says 1080p. but the games native resolution is not 1080p so it loses lots of detail and is ran at a lower resolution cept for the hud. it is like this on lots of games. marketing mislead

Can GTA IV ITSELF (so without upscaling of the PS3 or TV) output 1080P yes or no? Because if it can’t, i do feel bulshitted as a consumer if on the product it says 1080P.

sure the games, look better relyn, but i dont know why the fuck they would write “720p HD” behind MGS4 when it natively supports 1080… whats up with all this bullshit? why isnt sony doing anything to make all their games full HD compatible ? how come microsoft has been doing this all along while sony is stuck with their fingers up their asses… that is the real question we should be asking…

Not sure what kind of crappy tv you have – but I just did this on my 46″ Samsung 650 series and it made a noticable difference. Definitely looks better.

For me there is a difference, shadows and writting are less blurry and everything in general is alittle clearer.

For those who insist on saying that PS3 GTA IV is a 720p game, look at the back of the GTA IV box, in part it reads:

“Supported HD video output: 720p, 1080i, 1080p”

So, unless you have a different version, PS3 GTA IV is suppose to support 1080p. However, as already noted, it defaults to 720p and can’t be changed within the game to the supported 1080p resolution.

I’m sorry but this is just upscaling. I am playing this on a 21.5″ full 1080p monitor, so sitting close reveals the truth, you can see multiple pixels being one, (if you know what I mean). Nice try, and yes, technically it is outputting at 1080p, but, the game on PS3 is not even 720p if I recall, so it is just upscaling. Nice try though, hopefully GTA:V will be 1080p!!

DUDE THANK YOU!! i was wondering why it was on 720p all the time and i even went to this window to make sure that 1080p was clicked but i didnt know u had to unclick the other ones. the 720p mode looked kinda stetchy and like a badly drawn cartoon but the 1080p version looks AMAZING! thanks man

k setting it like this gets crappy resouliton, keep it 720p for the games that can only do that, some games it may be alright in 1080p but for most games are not, it will auto upscale to 1080 if the game was designed to do so if not its completly messing it up look at cod4 for example, the names on peoples heads are streached, the quality isnt that bad but it bothers u its not as crisp as it usually is, all things together dotn upscale it until it was designed for it, well guys good luck come play some socom, all 360s suck duck lmao

The games definitely look better in 1080p. I have a Sony 46″ xbr4 and did some testing on the few games I have. I wasn’t aware of the games coming up in 720p because the first game I played was Metal gear Solid 4 which natively came up as 1080p.

On GTAiv the game is slightly clearer. I could only really tell when I got a close look at the faces of people. On MLB the show 08, the game looked great when I first played it and found out it was 720p. I then went back and forth between 720p and 1080p and it is better at 1080p. Looking at the pitcher in 720p, you could see jagged lines and slight blurring, but the jaggedness is gone when I set my ps3 to play it as 1080p.

So, I suggest people just test and see what looks better for them and their TVs. I’ve heard many viewpoints saying better in its native res, or better upscaled to 1080p, and for me it is better upscaled to 1080p (when game is 1080p compatible of course) Oh, not sure how many games are native 1080p, but MGS4 is and it looks awesome, hehe.

Nobody else is saying it so I will. If you think “The difference between 720p and 1080i is very very minimal” you clearly know NOTHING about hdtv’s.

Here you’re upscaling a 630p game to 1080p, which will be very minimal, but only because you’re an idiot for thinking that it’s actually outputting a native 1080. Wikipedia the term ‘upscaling’ and realize that either your TV or the PS3 does it to bring this 630p image up to 1080p. All you’re doing is forcing the work onto your PS3. IF it has any effect at all, it will be putting more strain on your PS3 by making it do extra work. Learn before you post shit.

Ok so here’s the deal:

On a 1080p set or monitor, setting the PS3 to scale to 1080p will look ever so slightly less fuzzy. Here’s why:

Each time you scale something up, it will look slightly fuzzier. The thing is, the PS3 version runs at 640p. So before changing this setting, the PS3 is scaling from 640p to 720p, then the screen is scaling from 720p to 1080p. This is two scaling passes, and each pass will add an extra amount of fuzz.

However, if the PS3 scales directly to 1080p, it cuts out the middle scaling pass (the one that brings it up to 720p). Think of it like chinese whispers, the message gets distorted each time.

Of course, this is assuming the PS3 is scaling directly from 640p to 1080p as opposed to scaling from 640 to 720 to 1080 when you set this option on.

It is very simple to figure out, and was known SINCE THE RELEASE OF THE PS3. IT CHOOSES THE FIRST GOD DAMN RESOLUTION YOU MORONS. So you click all three and do the fucking math. 720 comes first. GOd damn your stupid.
