Flash Player upgraded thanks to Firmware 2.4
Firmware 2.4 has added a number of ‘hidden’ upgrades that we dont know about. The first was an upgrade to the Playstation Store where pre 2.4 the store would load sluggish and it wouldn’t cache properly. This was fixed in 2.4 and the store now loads a lot quicker. Also there is a new view mode if you press square while browsing through the content.
Along with the above, another hidden upgrade has been found and that is the ability to play Flash games in the Playstation 3’s web browser. Some people have reported that you could do that before 2.4 came out, but it seems now that a lot more people can play Flash games with their PS3’s with firmware 2.4 installed.
A user has emailed in saying that he can now play Flash games in the PS3’s browser and has been playing Sonic at the following site: http://www.sonicgamesflash.com/ultimate-flash-sonic-game.html (watch out for pop ups though)
You can now view and watch/play stuff on newgrounds.com
If your the lucky one who has installed firmware 2.4 with no problems go ahead and try your favourite flash games. Check this post out over at Gametrailers.
[UPDATE] According to Alex in the comments section, the Flash Player is now at version 7.0.25. Thanks Alex!

You’ve been able to play Flash Games on the PS3 since launch. The only difference is that now, they upgraded to a higher version of flash.
perhaps it has been upgraded but it still isn’t even good enough so I can view Gametrailers.com on my PS3. It is still asking for a Flash Update or Java Script to be turned on. If the PS3 is at the Highest Flash Version then I guess it is the Java Script but I really don’t know.
FYI the current version of Flash is Flash 9.0.124.0, so this upgrade is not anything to get excited about. Flash 9 supports H.264 video streams, but Flash 8 is still the standard used for most flash video sites, such as Gametrailers.com.
YouTube uses Flash7 for the low quality default video streams, and for this reason, Sony likely doesn’t feel the need to upgrade, because YouTube is the leader in online video distribution.
If Sony upgrades to Flash 8 that would be something very exciting, because then higher quality content could start to be ingested on the PS3 - making it a true internet connected multi-media console.
Hopefully someone will see the business opportunity (wii also uses Flash 7, so if Sony upgraded they’d be the first one to support it, giving them advantage).
