Features Firmware 2.5 needs
Firmware 2.40 (or 2.41 for some people) was a fantastic upgrade, in fact, it’s the best firmware release we’ve had so far (apart from a few problems, so lets call it 2.41). Lets identify whats missing and needed in the next Firmware upgrade presuming its firmware 2.5 if there are no small updates in between.
In no particular order:
In game web browsing
This is something we need, if we are in the middle of a game and your computer is not in the same room as your Playstation 3 it means you will have to quit the game and launch the web browser. It would be nice to access the web browser in-game. It will be quicker.
Send voice messages
Not vital but we’d love to see it. Sending text message is good at the moment but we want a bit more. Voicing someone a nasty message sounds fun!
Access the XMB no matter what
What i mean by this is that you can only access the XMB from PS3 games. Ok thats fine by me, we all wanted in-game XMB and we got it. What about the same for PS2 games and DVD’s etc.
Change more settings while in-game
You can add a bluetooth headset while in-game but what about changing some of the other settings would be a bonus.
Access the Playstation Store in-game
So we can track our downloads but what about accessing the Store while in-game to maybe start a new download or something?
Custom Soundtracks
This was rumoured to be included in the 2.40 update but wasn’t. Eric Lempel showed us a short demo of custom sound tracks while playing Pixel Junk Monsters. Custom soundtracks if the developer makes it so.
Cross game invites
This is a needed one. The invite system on the Playstation 3 isn’t very reliable, you should be able to invite people when your in-game and basically join the server they are playing on. Think GameSpy.
Smoother in-game XMB
While in-game XMB is brilliant, it feels a bit sluggish and takes time to navigate around. A much smoother experience will do the job.
Appear offline
You know, the feature used in instant messaging programs such as MSN. Appear offline to friends while signed in.
Delete Multiple messages
So you send/receive a lot of message but you have to delete them one by one. It would be nice to select all and delete.
Any Avatar
Getting sick of the default avatars for your PSN profile? What about uploaded your own image and using that?
Is there anything we’ve missed? What would you like to see in Firmware 2.5?
Those seem like worthy reworkings, though I’d love to see full avi and wmv support.

No, not “CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS.” They’ve been out for a while. I want to listen to my music, in-game. NO MATTER WHAT.
How bout flash 9 support so we can watch gametrailers.com and keep up with our animes.

why not turn the information board into an RSS feed?

1. new avatars is a must. with all the game characters they have/had over the years.. sony should be cranking them out like every other week. or just create new ones. plz
2.update web browser. no need for in-game browser, thats just laziness. but the need for a new one like foxfire is well needed for the best entertainment hub, right.
3.Sony intergrates a better system for game-sharing. Where as they need to find a way that ur able to share games but also prevent/lockout an other games/info others may try to access without ur permission. that might increase more folks to partake in sharing.
4. Cross game chat sessions.

You can delete multiple messages and have been from day one!
Try pressing Triangle on the “Received” or “Sent” folders and choose “Delete” if there are messages you want to save once again navigate to the message press “Triangle” and choose protect then when you “delete all” the protected message(s) remain(s).
Maybe you should play your PS3 more and write less!
I am 88% done with GTA IV it works fine on my PS3 so did FW 2.40.
Never had a problem with my PS3 (Runs 24/7) but that’s what I get when I buy a 60GB Launch Model.
Thanks to all you cry babies about price we now have a hollow shell of what once was a PS3.
You get what you pay for and that’s why I can play all PlayStation games and why everything just WORKS on my machine.
One final note, I still have my PS2 Launch Model from day 1 and it still runs like brand new!
So I don’t know what you guys are doing to destroy your consoles but, stop it!
if u want to “appear offline” then u can always go to your profile under friends and press triangle and select “unavailable”
i would like to see multiple profiles being used for each individual controller also multiple psn accounts

You can put offline whilst still signed in. Its under ur avatar at status. Offline/ online
how about clan support on the XMB. the ability to send/receive clan invites via the XMB. games no longer need to add this feature, but rather just read it the same as your PSN ID, and the appropriate tag to you name. even sweeter would be to allow us clan leaders to assign ranks within the clan. just offer the ultimate clan support so can listen to the x-bots cry.
the ability to play music in game from your media server as well. I don’t want to install music onto my ps3 hard drive, enough space already gets chewed away due to mandatory installs. And if I can listen to my music streamed from my computer while just sitting in the xmb I should be able to in game as well…kinda like its competition, the 360
THIS IS WHAT WE REALLY NEED
1. Polished PS3 Gamercard: Our current gamercard is excellent. But is EXTREMELY sluggish. It NEEDS to be speeded up exactly how the PS Store and the Friends list was. And polished for a more attractive look.
2. Revamped Internet Browser: Yes I agree, we do not need a browser DURING in game. But we do need it on PS3 nonetheless. It needs to be upgraded. Sure the Flash finally got upgraded to 7 ONLY. It needs to be at 8 or 9 atleast.
3. Polished In-Game XMB: Yes, the XMB needs to be faster when in game. Its too slow. We all really wish for it to be faster smooth while messaging.
4. Voice chat/messages: This is very important, not exactly vital but brilliant nonetheless. Very usefull.
5. 3rd Party Avitars/Custom: We definitly need more avitars especially from 3rd party and custom.
6. Change avitar/profile with ONE click: I’m sure we are all very tired of having to go to Account Management just to change an avitar or profile. And we ALL know its true because bearly any of us even bother to change it anymore cuz its too much more when we all could just press TRIANGLE, select Change Avitar, below Change Comment. Wouldnt that be nice?

I agree with all of the above mentioned. What about (Multiple Sign-ins). Maybe a friend or relative has an account on the same PS3. It would be nice 4 the both of you or all 4 to unlock trophies without taking turns signing in.
wtf? in-game web browser? it’s impossible because of RAM (all is used by game)
the reason there aint in game music no matter what, is due to microsoft having the patent (copyright thing) to shut down the developers music. So Sony can’t do this unless the developers allow it. kinda gay.
All I want to see is XMB access during DVD/Bluray playback and in-game-access to the internet browser so I can lookup walkthroughs during a game.

I’d prefer being able to read mkv if possible, better support for aud/vid codecs (divX3.11, wma pro, ogg, …)and srt/sub/ssa subtitles support
I’m pretty sure they could do these how about able to play every video file (mkv, fvi, avi, wma, rar i think) just everything what’s the problem with that. Also it would be nice in XMB when in settings dont know if that was mentioned but they have time i’m in no rush
Skype support. The console supports voice/video – why not put it to practical use?
We need few more important things..
Deleting multiple (movie?) files from usb devices.
Use the cell to upgrate avi files quality ?(as you do with DVD files)- make it think !…
Password protection for at least master accounts !
More messages to store.

YOU CAN ALREADY DELETE MULTIPLE MESSAGES. PRESS TRIANGLE ON RRECIEVED OR SENT MESSAGES BOX AND PRESS DELETE. SIMPLE. HOPE IT HELPS
@megaloute It’s on my wishlist as well. It prevents the PS3 from further overtaking my 360 as Home media stream device.

just to let you know you can delete multiple messages at once… all you do is hit triangle on received or sent in your message box and hit delete and it will delete them all… and for those messages you don’t want deleted just protect them… and we do have custom soundtracks thanx to 2.40 (2.41)… it’s all up to the devs to implement the feature into theire games… and plz no more custom soundtracks like SSHD & Burnout Paradise… even though it’s sweet and what not, i would much rather use the custom soundtracks from the XMB…
As far as im concerned, the ps3 is fine how it is. It does all i need it to and then some.
You really don’t NEED all those features, except maybe in game music, you just WANT them. I bet you wouldnt use them if you had them anyways.

Everything sounds great… 1 thing though I think it would be extremely awesome. You know how you access the dashboard in that piece of crap other system (xbox 360)you access it from the side. That would be awesome i dont like it being over my game I just dont……

*copy data from external drive & cd/dvd in background,so that you can do other things(play games,browse,etc
*automatic control power off after 5 minute
*create folder inside folder
*mkv file support
Now we have a clock it makes sense to have an alarm. maybe something that flashes the screen when its time to get some work done or get some sleep!

How about named folders for pictures/Music, I really cannot be bothered to go into every single photo and change the folder name individually, why can’t we select multiple and change the properties?

My Launch day 60gb PS3 still runs perfectly and have upgraded the HDD to 250GB !
get some idea how to upgrade the hdd?
Portable copy for blu’rays to psp would be nice since they talked about it three months ago!!
These are ALL real valid add-ons. Cross game invites and the ability to join other players in game trough the XMB would be real nice.
One major thing ive been waiting for is when your display settings are set to automatic and it comes up with all the displays 720p, 1080i & 1080p, wotever game you put in it plays it at 720p even if the game goes up to 1080p. I know you can change this through custom but it sucks cause you have to keep changing it for every game or demo you play otherwise it plays in standard def! :S
Here are some of the things I would like to see the PS3 get in the next Firmware Update.
- Continuios Playback of Movies
- Video Playlists
- Ability to Charge the Controllers While in Standby
- Ability to Create Sub-folders from within the PS3 menu System
- Scene Search for Video’s like in the PSP
- A Sleep Function so you can Play Music or Movies before you go to bed and have the PS3 shut down after a certain amount of time
- Better Compatibilty for Remote Play.

THINGS I THINK V.2.5 SHOULD NEED, AND WHY I THINK SO.
1. IN-GAME CHAT/PRIVATE CHAT. TEXTING IS NICE, BUT TALKING IS WAY FASTER. IM SURE IF YOU HAVE A REALLY LONG THING TO SAY, YOU WOULD WRATHER JUST SAY IT, WRATHER THAN TXT IT.
2. GAME INVITES. THIS FEATURE WOULD BECAUSE SOME GAMES YOU CANT INVITE YOUR FRIEND. LETS SAY LIKE YOUR IN A GAME OF CALL OF DUTY, YOU CANT INVITE YOUR FRIENDS DURING GAMEPLAY.
3. SONY SHOULD MAKE IT MANDITORY TO IMPLEMENT TROPHIES/IN-GAME MUSIC INTO EVERY PS3 GAME, BECAUSE I’M SURE THAT WE ALL TIRED OF WAITING TO RAISE OUR GAMER SCORE, AND WAITING TO JAMM TO MUSIC WHILE PLAYING WARHAWK!
4. A SLEEP TIMER. THIS WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL TO USERS, BECAUSE LET’S SAY YOUR WATCHING A MOVIE ON YOUR PS3, AND YOUR ON THE BOUNDS OF FALLING ASLEEP, WOULDN’T IT BE NICE TO SET A TIME LIKE 2 HOURS, THEN THE SYSTEM WOULD AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF, INSTEAD OF YOUR SYSTEM OVERHEATING?
5. VOICE MESSEGING. THIS WOULD BE GREAT BECAUSE ONCE AGAIN IT’S A FASTER WAY TO COMUNICATE.
6. PLAYBACK IN MUSIC. THIS IS NICE BECAUSE IF FOR SOME REASON YOU NEED TO STOP UR MUSIC, THE TRACK WOULD REPLAY BACK TO THE BEGINING. IF THIS FEATURE WAS TO BE IMPLEMENTED WITH V.2.5, THEN YOU COULD JUST RESUME TO WERE YOU LAST LEFT OFF.
7. A FAST FORWARD OR REWIND BUTTON ON THE LITTLE MUSIC PLAYLIST. BECAUSE LETS SAY YOU WANT TO GO TO YOUR FAVORITE PART IN A SONG WHILE PLAYING A GAME, OR PERHAPS REWINDING THE SONG IF YOU MISSED YOUR FAVORITE PART.
8. IN-GAME WEB BROWSER. THIS IS GREAT BECAUSE AGAING IF YOUR WAITING IN A GAME FOR YOUR FRIEND, OR NEED A WALK THROUGH FOR A GAME, YOU COULD JUST HEAD ON OVER TO WHATEVER SIGHT YOU DESIRE.
9. UPGRADED FLASH PLAYER: FLASH PLAYER 9. THIS IS NICE BECAUSE VIDEOS ON GAMETRAILERS, OR ON DIFFERENT WEBSITES REQUIRE FLASH 9, SO THIS WOULD DEFINATELY COME IN HANDY.
10. ACCESSING THE XMB DURING DVD/BD MOVIES, OR PS2/PS1 TITLES. CAUSE IM SURE IF YOU WANT TO SEND A MESSAGE TO YOUR FRIEND, YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO EXIT THE MOVIE, OR PS2/PS1 GAME TO SEND A MESSAGE.
11. IN-GAME P.S. STORE. THIS IS GREAT BECAUSE LETS SAY YOU DON’T HAVE A MAP PACK FOR A CERTAIN GAME, YOU COULD JUST BUY THAT MAP PACK AND THERE YOU GO, OR IF YOU WANTED TO DOWNLOAD A DEMO.
12. CUSTOM AVATARS. PUT YOUR PICTURE, OR PUT YOUR PICTURE THATS ON YOUR HARDRIVE. THIS IS GREAT BECAUSE THERE ARE LIMITED ICONS. EITHER THAT OR SONY NEEDS TO PUT MORE ICONS.
13. DURING REMOTE PLAY, PLAY YOUR GAMES. THIS WOULD BE COOL BECAUSE THE REMOTE PLAY ONLY ALLOWS YOU TO PLAY YOUR MUSIC, GO ON THE INTERNET, ACESS SOME SETTINGS, ETC. BUT PLAYING A GAME WOULD BE NICE.
14. SINCE SONY IS WORKING WITH GOOGLE, WHY NOT ADD IN A GOOGLE EARTH? THIS WOULD BE AWEASOME BECAUSE USERS COULD NOW SEE WHICH PART OF THE WORLD THEY WOULD WANT TO VIEW, OR PERHAPS VIEW THEIR OWN HOUSE.
15. THE IN-GAME XMB STILL KIND OF RUNS KIND OFF SLUGISH. THIS KIND OF GETS ANNOYING BECAUSE SENDING A MESSAGE COULD TAKE A BIT OF A WHILE.
THESE FEATURE WOULD BE AWEASOME IF THEY WERE INCLUDED WITH V.2.5! PERHAPS THEN PSN WOULD SURPASS XBL. =)
another feature i think should be present is the ability to store multiple wallpapers for the xmb background and maybe even have them automatically change like they do in the theme background images
