Eight Days animation test level video
Remember Eight Days? Yes that game that got canned. Below is a video of the very game in action… but not to the full extent. The video shows off the games animation system and it looks damn good. It’s a shame to see a game like this get cancelled.
Eight Days Trailer Basic Navigation

Eight Days was a coop based third person shooter that was set to be released in the summer of 2009. Unfortunately Sony cancelled the game in the summer of 2008 and with it went two and a half years of my work.
Here is a quick capture from the Eight Days Animation Test Level, showing the basic navigation of the main character, followed by the original 2006 E3 trailer. As Animation Director, it was my responsibility to design and implement the animation tools and pipeline with the goal of creating a fluid, yet responsive, animation system.

Shame the game got cancelled – that animation is by far the best I’ve ever seen.
But here’s a thought… maybe Sony can license that engine to Naughty Dog for Uncharted 2. How cool would THAT be?!
I agree, Uncharted 2 could use this animation engine. It would be good.
On the other hand, i don’t think Sony are willing to throw this engine in the bin, i think they will end up using it for another game.
It would’ve been a nice game to get. It was one of my most haves for the PlayStation 3. Hopefully we’ll see other games use the animation.
