October 20
PS3 Number 2 in Sales in US Last MonthThe sales results have just come in courtesy of the NPD Group. The results looks pleasing for PlayStation 3 owners, as the console has moved 491,800 units for the month of September. Beating out the Wii and 360 respectively, but still lacking against the DS. The PlayStation 3 has also seen a growth in sales over last year in compared to the month of September. Total hardware unit sales can be seen below.
Hardware Units
PlayStation 2 146.0K
PlayStation 3 491.8K
PSP 190.4K
Xbox 360 352.6K
Wii 462.8K
Nintendo DS 524.2K
Let’s hope that this momentum pushes well into the holiday season with Sony’s lineup of great titles coming out recently and for the future.

March 20
Sales picking up in the US againBut are they good enough for the PlayStation to to beat their competitors. It seems not. Once the greatest playground of PlayStation to sell units, they are not able to get a decent foothold over the Xbox 360.
In recent numbers from NPD Nintendo had dominated in hardware sales (sounds familiar).
- Wii: 753,000
- DS: 588,000
- Xbox 360: 391,000
- PS3: 276,000
- PSP: 199,000
- PS2: 131,000
And software number were no different. Though Street FIghter IV managed to sell a combined of almost 900,000 on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Wii Fit still reigned supreme. Street Fighter IV sold 50,000 units less on the PlayStation 3 then the Xbox 360.
There was some good news for Sony though. Killzone 2 managed to sell 323,000 times in less then 48 hours. Landing on a 5th place. Those were the only two titles that managed to get in the top 10.
- Wii Fit with balance board – Nintendo – 644K
- Street Fighter IV – Xbox 360 – Capcom – 446K*
- Street Fighter IV – PS3 – Capcom – 403K*
- Wii Play with remote – Nintendo – 386K
- Killzone 2 – Sony – 323K
- Mario Kart Wii with wheel – Nintendo – 263K
- Call of Duty: World at War – Xbox 360 – Activision – 193K*
- Mario Kart DS – Nintendo – 145K
- New Super Mario Bros. – Nintendo – 144K
- Guitar Hero World Tour – Wii – Activision – 136K*
* Includes Collector’s, Limited and Bundled Editions

For a second week running according to Media Create, PlayStation has been able to fend of competitors in the hardware sales chart.
But it’s not like you think. Both units dropped (big) number with the PlayStation Portable dropping to 43,463 (from +60,000) and the PlayStation 3 dropping with 12,000.
This shows the PlayStation 3 really had a big boost from the recent released games. But is now (slowly) dropping again. Atleast it’s not dropping as bad as the 360 with lost almost 50%. Check out the numbers:
PSP – 43,463
PS3 – 28,014
DSI – 27,564
Wii – 17,941
DS Lite – 11,571
Xbox 360 – 8,378
PS2 – 4,844

While CVG was writing about Resident Evil 5 shipping over four millions copies worldwide, Chart Track confirmed to them that the game is “in the process becoming the fastest selling game in the franchise and Capcom’s biggest ever launch”.
In it’s debut week in Japan, the game managed to sell over 400,000 copies. So the four millions is too big of a target? Maybe, but they probably decided to do this after discovering that the demo was downloaded over four millions times.
Thanks to the company’s proprietary engine, the MT Framework, Capcom was able to make Resident Evil 5 a multi-platform title, giving a vast number of players the opportunity to enjoy the game
A successful franchise? 40 Millions sold since 1996 should help make your opinion.

The result, PlayStation 3 is still doing well. But the question remains is this only due to the recent releases of Street Fighter 4, Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5 and Yakuza 3?
It might be, after weeks of slumps even the PlayStation Portable managed to jump way ahead, following the release of the new PSP coloured units.
- PSP: 59,568
- PS3: 39,835
- DSi: 32,102
- Wii: 16,560
- Xbox 360: 14,994
- DS Lite: 11,240
- PS2: 4,954

February 28
Japan shows a different face in hardware chartsFor the week ending on February 22th, both the Wii and PlayStation 3 got left behind by the Xbox 360. What did you say? The Xbox ahead of the Wii in Japan, No that’s a lie? Nevertheless it’s true.
If we posted this a year ago, nobody would believe us. But it has happend.
The 360 sales jumped to 25,334 units after the release of Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope, which itself sold 162,232 times in it’s first week.
The Wii sold 16,973 units while the PlayStation 3 managed ‘only’ 16,149. that is a drop of 2,500 units from last week. The PlayStation Portable also took heavy hits, moving under the 30,000 line.
Here is the list according to Media Create:
DSI – 41,839
PSP – 29,552
Xbox 360 – 25,334
Wii – 16,973
PS3 – 16,149
DS Lite – 9,975
PS2 – 5,029

The February bonanza has started in Japan, and Street Fighter IV has started by selling 58,000 copies on the PlayStation 3 and 28,000 on the Xbox 360. We hope that the PlayStation version will also take the lead in sales when it launches in the rest of the world.
Despite this being the first major series update in 10 years and finally in 3D, it didn’t manage to break Soul Calibur IV opening day record of 92,000 copies.

February 13
PlayStation losing ground in USNot much has changed in the New Year for PlayStation in the US. Sales are still down for the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and no software title in the top 10.
Something to get worried about, you would think. It seems that consumer in America are really going after the cheap consoles. Is this because they can eventually ‘upgrade’ their SKU making the initial price more attractive? It seems so. There is no denying that Microsoft’s current business model for the 360 fits well in the current economic climate.
Of course it’s expected that there would be a big decline after a holiday month but the PlayStation’s competitors are doing better (yet again).
Compared to last year, Microsoft (25.5) and Nintendo (59.5%) managed to sell more then in January 2008. While the PSP dropped from 230.000 to 172,300 and the PS3 from 269.000 to 203,200. If you follow the results from January 2007, numbers have been down by 16.6% for the PS3.
And the bad news continued on the software front as Nintendo and Microsoft dominated the top 10. With the top three spots belonging to Wii titles such as Wii Fit, Wii play and Mario Cart Wii. Other titles in the list included Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty: World at War and Skate 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour (Wii), New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS and Lord of the Rings: Conquest (360) closing the list.
Indeed, January has not been a good month for PlayStation brand, but we’re looking forward to this month’s numbers with big hitters like Street Fighter IV and Killzone 2 dropping soon to put up a fight.
We just hope that Sony will realize that Europe is their ‘new’ US even if it’s for a short period.

February 5
PSP titles selling well in JapanWith the economy in pretty bad shape and hardware numbers falling, some good news for Sony might be good.
In the latest collected data by Media Create, the PlayStation Portable software title are dominating the top 5 for weekly figures ending on February 1st.
Bumping Wii Play from it’s number one spot was done by Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. It was able to shift 213,000 units in it’s first week. Followed that was Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 both selling close to 110,000 units on the PSP and PS2 each.
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G closes PlayStation’s ‘dominance’ by selling 23,000 there might still be hope for the PSP platform. Here is the list
- Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (PSP)
- Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PSP)
- Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS2)
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (DS)
- Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (PSP the Best) (PSP)
- Taiko no Tatsujin Wii (Wii)
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (Wii)
- Wii Play: Mario Tennis (Wii)
- Rhythm Tengoku Gold (DS)
- Wii Fit (Wii)

The first month of the new year is almost over and the latest hardware sales numbers in Japan have been released. All units have dropped (what can you expect) only some more then others.
The PlayStation Portable sales dropped with 10% and the PlayStation 3 numbers were with almost 15%.
Good news? Sort of. Their direct competitors dropped more then 17%. The DSi and Wii both 17% and the 360 almost 30%. The 360 managed to sell 10,000 units less than the PS3 but was still ahead by 2,000 on the PS2.
- DSi: 51,618 10,907 (17.44%)
- PSP: 38,280 4,279 (10.05%)
- Wii: 26,770 5,563 (17.21%)
- PS3: 17,708 2,982 (14.41%)
- DS Lite: 13,686 5,123 (27.24%)
- Xbox 360: 7,663 1,913 (19.98%)
- PS2: 5,077 683 (11.86%)
We are wondering what he future will hold for all consoles.

Nobody would have expected this last year but it seems that the recession has finally taken it’s toll for Nintendo as well. In Japan the Wii’s weekly sales dropped 9,000 units. That means for the week ending on January 18th, the PlayStation 3 is only behind by 12,000 sales (not much compared to what it used to be). It’s the closest it has been to the home console market leader in months.
This ‘performance’ is interesting as at it’s current price-point many would not predict the PlayStation 3 to keep alive. To clear up some matter, the sales of the PlayStation 3 didn’t rise for this week but ‘only’ dropped 7,500.
Edge Online said something that made me think
A clearer picture of Sony’s, and indeed its Nintendo’s, performance will be established when Japanese consumers’ expenses become more balanced.
We look forward to this brawl once the dusts settles.

January 5
Blu-ray sales surge high in the UK
With Zavvi and Woolworth closing in Great Britain and US media sources claiming the PlayStation 3 will not survive another ‘weak’ year. Blu-ray sales numbers prove yet again that Sony choose the right format for the PS3.
British Video Association let know that the numbers for Blu-ray disc sales have been up by 400%, compared to the same period in 2007. The biggest title like in most countries has been The Dark Knight, which sold a 281,000 times in the UK.
On DVD news Mamma Mia! became the fastest selling DVD with 3 million sales in it’s first week.

December 27
PlayStation 3 still King in JapanAfter two/three weak months of sales in Japan (september/october) and North America (November) it’s seems PlayStation is on the up again in Japan.
The PlayStation managed to sell 3 times more then it’s direct competitor (Xbox 360) during the period December 15th till December 21st.
