After 2.4, what is needed for PSN?

So Xbox Live has been better than Playstation Network in terms of features and still is better but with Firmware Version 2.4 on the way things are about to change.

So when firmware 2.4 is released the Playstation Network will be pretty much neck to neck with Xbox Live. Firmware 2.4 will add in-game XMB and a Trophy system (Sony’s answer to XBL achievements) so this firmware will pretty much overtake XBL ever so slightly.

Just think about the $50 a year fee for XBL versus Free for PSN. Not only that but Playstation Network is easily expandable through these firmware updates so they can probably add a lot more feature than XBL.

In terms of connection and online play there is nothing wrong with online play on the PSN, no lag apart from if your playing with someone with a crappy connection.

Whats missing from PSN that will definitely make it better than XBL after firmware 2.4?

  • Advance invite system. Although you can invite friends while in game before you start a game but Home features a more advance invite system where it will launch the game and jump straight in automatically.
  • PSN’s player based hosting VS Microsofts dedicated servers. This can be rectified if Sony were to put some dedicated servers in for PSN, probably a future plan.
  • A new user interface. Ok XBL is far easier to use and navigate but again this can be sorted just like the Playstation Store got sorted.
  • XBL has movie and tv show downloads. Ok but Sony is coming out with a video store.
  • More content. PSN needs more content and XBL currently has more and gets more every week. Again this can be fixed by game companies releasing more demo’s and Sony acting upon it.

All the above can be sorted out and implemented via future firmware updates, so eventually Playstation Network will overtake Xbox Live and best of all it will still be free of charge.

Can you think of any features that are missing from Playstation Network that will make it better than Xbox Live AFTER firmware 2.4 is released?

[UPDATE] There is a typo in this article. I got mixed up and very sorry for that. Playstation Network has dedicated servers while Xbox Live doesn’t. Just wanted to correct it.

The fact you said that Xbox Blades are better then XMB brands this article: BS.

[Reply to this comment]

JAJAJAJAJAJA, its funny how we try to put PSN above XBL and its not true. XBL works great, hopefully soon PSN will be close, but I don’t see it.

[Reply to this comment]

You know judging by the name of your website i would think that by now you would know that PSN is actually the one with dedicated servers and not the other way around.

Just google it and you’ll see that i’m right.. it’s ok thou.. i would’ve thought the same thing being that you have to pay for live and not for psn..

In case you’re not sure if what i say it’s true try to find out which games on live actually have dedicated servers…

Insomniac does, warhawk does, UT3 does, and on and on..

[Reply to this comment]

Of course you don’t see it, you’re a fucking blind fanboy or should I say foreigner!!
Dey tuk urr jerbs!

[Reply to this comment]

Its funny how you change things around, you see Microsoft does NOT use dedicated servers, Sony DOES. The fact that after 2.4 PSN will be better than Xbox live, because we will still be playing online for free.

[Reply to this comment]

a few features that would be a plus would be:

1) the ability to save playlists created from an external usb or card).
2) the ability to connect to your psn account via psp or computer at sony’s site.
3) rss feeds (with the ability to subscribe)
4) a “major nelson”-type spokesman for the network.
5) more visualizations for the music player.
6) more echocrome levels for the psp

when it arrives, it will be a huge boost for sony, but untill it hits, i do most of my online gaming elsewhere.

“PSN’s player based hosting VS Microsofts dedicated servers. This can be rectified if Sony were to put some dedicated servers in for PSN, probably a future plan. ”

Uhm…. your info is VERY backwards here. Most PS3 Games used dedicated while most XBox games use P2P.

[Reply to this comment]

I think the ps3 would be perfect if they could add .mkv support for high def movies. Also if the usb would work while on standby to charge my controllers.plus in game xmb

[Reply to this comment]

It would be Cool,if we had a profile so ppl can see our friends, and what we like..like myspace and bebo..

[Reply to this comment]

It would be cool if you could play movies and so from an external hard drive instead of transferring it into the ps3 hard drive first.

[Reply to this comment]

You can play movies from an external hard drive already. Just press triangle -> display all (assuming your hard drive is Fat32).

[Reply to this comment]

Wow this is a shit article.

1. like others said, PSN has the dedicated servers, live does not.

2. the XMB, its alot easier to use, simpler, and faster.

3. Home will solve many problems but I think alot will claim about wanting to do that with out having to launch home.

4. the movie/music store is on the way so they claim.

Thinks that will easily make the PS3 better then 360 is mkv support. After that, then the PS3 and PSN will kill the 360.

[Reply to this comment]

and yeah like he said, you can play movies, music and other things from your external hard drive, I do it all the time.

As long as the files are in a format the PS3 can play which 90% of formats can. also the hard drive must be formated to Fat32

best thing is to add these folders to the external drive: VIDEO, MUSIC, PHOTO

put movies in video, music in music, pics in photo. Then click on the hard drive when it shows up under video, music or photo and you should see all your movies, music or photos show up with out having to hit “Display all”

wow looks like we got a lot of x box fan boys, these reasons are so pathetic. reasons such as, “this article is bs, or this is shit” are so childish. they don’t want to admit the fact that their lovely money hungry Microsoft x box will be dominated by the PS3 and the (pardon my language) shitty wii.
hey guys just except the fact that yall lost.

[Reply to this comment]

Fanboys just make me laugh sometimes…why dont you guys just look at the facts and just let it be. If you like PS3 cool…If you like 360 cool. Why do we have to argue about what system is better? I have both and love both, but to be honest their more better games on 360 than PS3 and better online setup. I believe Sony is doing good things to make their experience just as good, but thus far its not happening. And lets be real cheap skates…$50 bucks a year is not that much money to complain about for a great experience.

[Reply to this comment]

Sorry, my mistake with the ’servers’ information, i won’t change it, i’ll admit my mistake.

[Reply to this comment]

I thing that I would like to see implemented after 2.4 is. Audio Control. Having to switch between HDMI output and Optical is a pain in the arse.. I also agree with the supporting MKV files. One more thing better file sorting, adding sub folders to folders would be a real +..

[Reply to this comment]

sry i dont mean to b horrible but half the people here are f”"”king thik, half the things that are said here are already available on the ps3. e.g.
u can use existing playlists and copy it to the ps3
u can play movies with out having it on ur hard drive ( CD, memory card, media server streaming…)
i could go on for ages, i bet half the people here dont even have a ps3 or some are just too stupid to realise and workout how to use the ps3 features. so plz dont post random bulsh** comments if u dont know what u talking about.

[Reply to this comment]

For me a big hole is the lack of a internet radio player. The PSP has this, why not the PS3?

Streaming from my PC works ok, but I think it should be built into the PS3.

10 psn =$0 10 xbl= $500, 100 psn= $0 100 xbl= $5000, 1000 psn =$0 1000 xbl= $50,000 1MILLION psn= $0 1MILLION xbl= $50,000,000 microsoft are just cashin in on you FOOLS and there are about 10 or 11MILLION of you so you do the math…. nice 1 mr.Gates…. even Bill is laughin at U!!!!!!

[Reply to this comment]

i think the web browser needs updating, i can no longer go on hotmail because the website got updated, and i wanna see my emails damn it!!!

[Reply to this comment]

Yeah I already feel that the PSN is up there with Live it’s just that right now Live is more established to essentially no one really knows about 2.4 and what it brings to PSN.

Although this feature should have been in a LONG time ago it is better late then never. I am just glad that great games are coming out and so long as i don’t lag on Warhawk or Resistance 2 and SOCOM (when they come out) I am a happy camper here lol.

[Reply to this comment]

“Whats missing from PSN that will deffinitely make it better than XBL after firmware 2.4?

Advance invite system”

PSN is getting that

“PSN’s player based hosting VS Microsofts dedicated servers”

You have it backwards. PSN uses dedicated servers, Live uses Peer to Peer

“A new user interface. Ok XBL is far easier to use and navigate ”

You again have it backwards. PS3’s XMB has won awards for how user friendly it is, Live is so convoluted even it’s own developers complain about it

[Reply to this comment]

ADD FLASH 9 TO BROWSER!!!!!

[Reply to this comment]

I’d like to see user changing in the in game xmb, the ability to sign in on multiple psn accounts at the same time(for splitscreen online) and more splitscreen online games FRIG

[Reply to this comment]

you can play movies and music off an external harddrive i do it all the time obviously tj u dont have a ps3 or u would know, add flash player 9, audion control ingame i also hate changing from optical when playing some demos, an yes i do have a ps3 an am about to play warhawk(the second best game next to metal gear 4)more video downloads and ps1 and 2 games would b nice. And i heard somewhere on some site fw2.40 will include the ablility to charge your controller on standby now i can charge my phone while on standby nice. Again thats what i heard.

[Reply to this comment]

nurrrr
strongly agree

[Reply to this comment]

coming from a 360 owner, this is a SHIT AND POORLEY WRITTEN ARTICLE. tHE ONLY time PSN will be bettert han XBL is when Home comes out. also PSN uses dedicated servers, and 360 lags more (gears of war)

[Reply to this comment]

joshua, check your spelling before accusing others. And Xbox Live is going down, oh wait, the Xbox 360 is going down!

[Reply to this comment]

Lol look at all the Xbox fanboys trying to protect their precious console. PSN will be if not already is better than xbox live. Oh and joshua don’t accuse others with their grammer when you can’t even spell properly ‘POORLEY’? And this article is not badly written at all, it just gets to the point.

[Reply to this comment]

Xbox Live doesn’t have dedicated servers, you stupid fuck. Some PS3 games do.

[Reply to this comment]

Yea actually the PSN XMB has been considered so user-friendly that it has been implemented on the new line of Bravia Televisions that Sony is releasing. I hated the XBox setup and I owned the system for 2 years before i got rid of it for a PS3.

[Reply to this comment]

How many blog posts littered with erros, pretending to be factual articals do we have to endure…

This ones error;

[QUOTE]PSN’s player based hosting VS Microsofts dedicated servers. This can be rectified if Sony were to put some dedicated servers in for PSN, probably a future plan.[/QUOTE]

It’s actually the reverse, XBL is a peer-peer server-less network. PSN can use both dedicated servers and peer-peer. Unreal Tournement, Warhawk and numerous other PS3 games already use dedicated servers…

[Reply to this comment]

What’s up with people not able to give ‘normal’ comments without using profanity? If the author is wrong come with arguments and fact.

[Reply to this comment]

Personally I think PSN is already better than XBL, but Xbox is basically cock blocking PS3 by buying up exclusive rights to games and timed exclusives. Xbox is also holding back developers by limiting the amount of space that can be used on a disc, I mean come on four discs for for a game on a next gen console? As far as what I’d like to see on PSN; improved web browser, for easier updates of Flash and Java, the ability to play media during a game, Music and movie… maybe in the form of a pip or something. Other than that Its great (JUST NEED MORE GAMES)

[Reply to this comment]

Multiple Sign-ins would b sweet. Family or friends could sign in and collect trophies together, rather than taking turns.

[Reply to this comment]

add the video record feture
and make it so the music can be listen to in all games
fix the inivte system its a little difficult
and finally cross game chat

[Reply to this comment]

wat the ps3 needs is to put the way u chat with friends at a anygame purpose meanin if im playin mgs4 and my buddy is playiin resistence we can chat not send msj chat to meet up, play another game, or just to have a conversation

they also need to add the downloadable demos so we can play the game before buyin them and old arcade games, nes snes sega etc.

add a buddy list that can store neatly ur friends
in the same menu the way to video chat, chat, send msjs, view friends stats, etc….

once sony adds this it will be better than the XBL remember we have blue-ray and firmware at unlimited capacity for ps3 the skys the limit turst me all games want is that it makes it more interactive and better way to online play. the browser is the best and everything is good just add these componeents to the new firmware and ur a top top top top top seller no more XBL in the mix cause we look better are bigger and stronger with the same quality .

everybody wants bigger

bigger interaction, worlds maps, ect.
better grafics.better conecction.btter game play
stronger games

ps is the best maybe not now but SOON
